What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Teac AE-200

 The Teac model AE-200 incorporates for amplification a "differential circuit" widely used in computers and instrumentation data recorders which are also manufactured at the Computer Products Division of Teac. The result is an extremely wide dynamic range and virtually flat response extending well into the low frequency range.

For ultimate performance of the differential amplifier, a dual power supply system is employed in the Teac model AE-200 (+40 volt, -0 volt, -40 volt). This permits elimination of condensers from the output circuit, to provide automatic compensation of delicate current balance and virtually flat response. This is particularly evident in the low frequency range.
In addition to an ordinary protective circuit, a special thermo-breaker is provided in the Teac AE-200 for complete protection from accidental damage to the amplifier by short circuits in the speaker wiring. Should the breaker be tripped by a short circuit, the cause should be eliminated and the reset buttons depressed to restore operation of the amplifier.
 The Teac model AE-200 gives you 50 clean watts per channel at 8 ohms, and 60 watts per channel at 4 ohms. This is the amplifier's full rated power (continuous sine wave) with a total harmonic distortion of an amazing 0,5% within 0,5 dB. Teac has no need to rely on misleading, inflated so-called "music power" specifications. The virtually undistored power AE-200 delivers is more than enough to drive any speaker system.

Phase reverse switch. A very convenient  combination switch for phase checking of multichannel speaker systems by reversing polarity or electrically interchanging the left and right speakers. Also, either channel speaker can be individually switched on.

Balans Check. A very unique circuit utilizing the differential amplifier characteristic. When the balance in output of both L and R channels is perfect, they will be canceled and no sound will be heard from the speaker. A signal source applied in parallel to the input is most convenient at making this check.

Technics RS-630

 The art of recording now takes another step forward.
Cassette tape decks have really come into a world of their own, thanks to the many technical breakthroughs accomplished by some very ingenious engineers. The Dolby noise reduction, vastly improved tape heads, peak level check meters, chromium dioxide tape cassettes and stabilized tape transport are just some of the many reasons for the cassette deck's rise into the ranks of top quality high fidelity systems. This should be enough to satisfy even the most professional type of audio fan, but Technics engineers weren't happy. Their constant striving for even better and better systems has produced a real classic in cassette tape decks - the RS-630 where all controls and tape loading are operated from the Front. With the RS-630, you not only have all that's best in the latest cassette deck technology, you have it all there on the front panel, bringing it right into line with your other Hi-Fi components.
 Separate bias and equalization selectors for optimum recording with any type of tape.

Outstanding peak check meters.
All music contains short sharp signal peaks which are several times more intense than the average signal level. These peaks may well overreach the tape's ability to accommodate them, resulting in distorsion. To avoid this,the deck's recording level may be set to a lower position, but if set too low, tape noise may become noticeable during quieter passages. Accurate adjustment of recording level is then very important, and this is where the unique peak check meters play a major role. These two large, easy to read meters can give both "conventional" level readings (which are more or less averaged readings), and peak check readings where they respond to even the shapest signal peaks.  This will go a long way in making genuinely high quality tape recordings.
 The Dolby noise reduction
The Dolby noise reduction system has greatly improved the quality of cassette tapes by removing much of the background noise. Technics was very quick to adopt the Dolby system as  a standard feature for the discriminating audio fan. The Dolby system removes the hiss-like tape noise, particularly noticeable during the quieter lulls, by boosting high notes duriug recording. In playback, the Dolby circuit reduces the boosted notes back to their previous levels, but at the same time reduces the tape hiss to a much lower, almost inaudible level. It's no wonder that the Dolby system has become a standard feature for the keen audio enthusiasts.

HPF head with extremely long service life.
One of the major drawbacks in any tape recording has been the constant wear and tear on tape heads. But now Technics engineers have also overcome this problem with their extremely long life HPF heads which withstand even the longest wear and tear. They are guaranteed to last at least for 10 years, far beyond the best performance of normal heads.

Output level control
This control is essential if you want to adjust the cassette deck's output to the same level as your tuner and turntable, etc. You will need no further adjustment of your amplifier volume control, and will be free to switch from component to component all at athe same volume.

 The RS-M63's 3-head configuration lets you do what most other comparably priced decks don't; monitor your recordings while you're recording. And, since our separate HPF record and playback heads are precisely gapped and enclosed in a single housing, you won't get azimuth error. What you will get is an extremely wide frequency response with CrO₂ tape and an incredibly high response with metal tape.
 As good as that sounds, double Dolby will make it sound even better, because there are separate Dolby circuits for recording and playback. So you can monitor your tapes with the full effects of Dolby Noise Reduction. That means a lot when it comes to accurate recordings.
So do the RS-M63's fluorescent (FL) bar graph meters. Especially when it comes to dynamic range. Because with their device attack time of just 5-millionths of a second, they can respond to the most sudden musical transients.

AR-2x has a 10-inch bass speaker, mounted in an acoustically sealed enclosure filled with glass wool, and in addition , a small, high-dispersion cone speaker. Separate controls on the back of the AR-2x  permit independent adjustment of the level of the midrange / high frequency speakers. The performance standard in the design of the AR-2x was the same as that for the AR-3a; natural reproduction of music without exaggeration or artificiality of sound. But where quality in the case of the AR-3a hes been limited only by the state of the art. And our own engineering skill, here price is also a consideration.

The new SAE "01" Series power amplifiers represent a redirection of amplifier design philosophy in which great emphasis is placed upon reality,  the need for your power amplifier to interact with your speakers and produce the desired result (clean, clear, enjoyable music) regardless of volume level, program material or speaker design. The "01" amplifiers are capable of passing the complex musical signals of your program material into the equally complex load of your speakers with the highest degree of accuracy.
 What makes this different from any other amplifier design? Very simply, the degree to which SAE has pursued this goal.
 Other amplifiers seem to be satisfied with great "specs". They often forget that laboratory test situations - the standard distortion measurements we've heard so much about - do not reproduce the reality of your music, played through your speakers, in your living room.
 Those THD and IM measurements so often used to judge an amplifier's performance are obtained by feeding a simple, predictable sine wave to an amplifier and observing how accurately that amplifier passes it to a static 8 Ω load resistor. Since the sound waves of real music are neither simple non predictable, and a real loudspeaker is a dynamic load which only occasionally offers exactly 8 ohms of resistance.
SAE saw the need to go beyond conventional test procedures. We fed music - not sine waves - into loudspeakers, and our findings led us to the creation of the "01" Concept, and a line of power amplifiers which embodies all of the following features:
High Current Capability
When we replaced the standard 8 Ω resistor with an active loudspeaker, we saw a complex ever-changing load which often appears to the amplifiers as a load even lower than 2 ohms. When this happens your amplifier needs to deliver more current to your loudspeaker than would ever be necessary with an 8 Ω load. All of the SAE "01" amplifiers have a vast amount of reserve power. In fact, each is capable of over ten times the amount required to breeze through conventional performance tests.

Balanced Circuit Design
Your power amplifier must be prepared to deal with a bombardment of highly complex, constantly fluctuating sound waves,  waves that are asymmetric (where the positive half of the wave is often quite different from the negative half). SAE's solution to this challenge is separate complementary amplifiers. Each channel  of an "01" power amplifier actually contains two amplifiers - one for the positive side of teh program and one for the negative side. From input to output, a totally independent amplifier designed to deal with that particular part of the waveform. Thase mirror image amplifiers combine to provide a signal so free of distortion there is no need for feedback correction.

Natural Damping
Damping is the amplifier's ability to provide controlled "breaking" of the speaker at the end of a waveform. Conventional amplifier tests actually evaluate the sum of two very different types of damping. One, which we call "artificial" damping, is generated in the negative feedback loop of the amplifier ,and therefore, is both frequency and level dependent . The second type. "natural" damping, is the actual internal resistance of  of the amplifier. It is not affected by the frequency or level of the signal. As the music becomes more complex, and particularly when high frequencies are involved, this natural damping is what really controls the loudspeaker. SAE found this damping factor to be determined by the number of output devices, the size and quality of the power supply, and the actual wiring of the amplifier. Our "01" Series is designed to give a very high natural damping ability … to provide precise control of your loudspeakers regardless of the music.
